IMM and İSKİ continue water investments without slowing down. Certain activities are being executed on water tracking and water efficiency along with the wastewater treatment facilities.
Among the recent investments, Ataköy Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant’s 2nd Phase launched its activities on November 14. Ataköy Wasterwater Treatment Tunnel became operational on February 25. This Tunnel that will enable the treatment of Başakşehir, Küçükçekmece and Bakırköy municipalities’ wastewater has been opened at a ceremony with the participation of Ekrem İmamoğlu, Mayor of İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality. This Tunnel will transmit the wastewater of these three municipalities to Ataköy Wastewater Advanced Biological Treatment Plant instead of Küçükçekmece Wastewater Pretreatment Plant. In this way, the water quality of the Sea of Marmara is expected to be increased substantially.
Construction of the Emirli 2nd Phase Wastewater Treatment Plant
Ömerli Drinking Water Treatment Plant has been serving as İstanbul’s largest water treatment plant. The plant provides drinking water to the entire Anatolian side and a part of the European side, and its current capacity is 1 million and 550 thousand cubic meters. Ömerli Drinking Water Treatment Plant’s daily capacity will increase 500 thousand cubic meters more with the Emirli 2nd Stage Treatment Plant being built within the plant. Ömerli’s daily capacity will reach 2 million and 50 thousand cubic meters. Emirli 2nd Stage Water Treatment Plant is planned to be opened on June 2.
Şile Drinking Water Treatment Plant to be opened in June:
Drinking Water Treatment Plant to solve the water shortage during summertime in Şile will be launched in June. IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu declared that the existing plant with a capacity of 20 thousand cubic meters could be increased to 40 thousand cubic meters with the state-of-the-art technology implemented at the facility. Obtaining healthier water is planned with the TRY20 million’ investment based on new technology and a new membrane filtration system which will eventually reach a capacity to deactivate the former plant.
İSKOM Founded for Effective Monitoring of Water:
Founded to execute İstanbul’s water management with up-to-date systems, Istanbul Water Control and Automation and Center (İSKOM) will serve within the body of İSKİ and monitor the entire process of delivering the water obtained from the water sources to the citizens. İSKİ General Director Raif Mermutlu relayed that the center enabled online tracking of the water’s journey from the water sources to the taps and allowed intervention when required. All details in the system, ranging from rainfall in each water basin to instantaneous energy consumption, can be followed in this center.
İSKİ’s Afforestation Project for Increasing the Water Quality:
In addition to the treatment plant investments, İSKİ aims to enhance the water’s amount and quality by conducting afforestation programs around the city’s drinking water basins. The project plans to plant 120 thousand trees by the end of the year, and so far, 20 thousand trees have been planted in Büyükçekmece, Terkos and Ömerli. By planting long-living trees around dams and reservoirs, soil conservation, reducing evaporation, increasing water amount and quality and embracing new green zones are aimed.
